Over 160 upcoming EU policy initiatives

Over 160 upcoming EU policy initiatives

We have already identified over 160 upcoming EU policy initiatives across a range of sectors (in addition to the more than 60 policy files inherited from the previous term), which indicates that policy-makers and PA professionals will be far from not having intellectual challenges to keep them busy.  Our analysis factors in the European Commission's guidelines and the mission letters of each commissioner-candidate.

The overarching  priority is competitiveness, especially for the industrial sector. Among the main initiatives following into this line are the Clean Industrial Deal and European Competitiveness Fund.

Market unification and regulatory reduction are also on the agenda through initiatives like the Horizontal Single Market Strategy and Single Market Barriers Reduction Act.

In order to boost competitiveness, the bloc is also advancing energy integration and banking unification. There will also be a notable focus on education, skills and research: Union of Skills, European Innovation Act, etc.

The EU is expected to uphold its climate commitments, including the 2040 European Climate Law, while reviewing some of the Green Deal legislation such as CO2 standards for cars. In parallel, a new Circular Economy Act will promote sustainable practices across the economy, while a European Water Resilience Strategy will address water scarcity and resilience. The chemical sector will also be addressed by a new Chemicals Industry Package and the agri-food sector will expect the Vision for Agriculture and Food to be presented in the first 100 days of the new European Commission.

The other key concern for the EU is security, such as EU defence, but also in the digital sphere: a new Digital Fairness Act for online safety and Democracy Shield against foreign interferences. The EU will also be dealing with shortages and supply of critical goods and services: Critical Medicines Act, EU stockpiling strategy and a potential EU Preparedness Law.

We expect a key focus on migration combined with a strategic focus is on the Mediterranean region, with initiatives such as the New Pact for the Mediterranean.

Social policy will also be on the agenda, such as a new European Affordable Housing Plan and an Action Plan for Affordable Energy Prices.
